Burlington Humane is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with an open house on Oct. 6 at the shelter at 740 Griffith Court, Burlington, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend and visit the animals and learn about our past, present and future.
Since 1974, Burlington Humane has been caring for Burlington’s animals in need, first rescuing dogs that were in peril of being sold for research or being euthanized. A group of concerned Burlington citizens formed Animals in Need (later Animal Aid), and found homes for many of those dogs. From the beginning the group decided to become a no-kill shelter.
Just like the Society, our name has also evolved over the years and was changed to The Society for Animal Aid (Burlington Incorporated) in 1984 when it became a Registered Charity. In 2006, it became Burlington Humane Society. In 2008, a new shelter was built and there was finally space for the dogs within the adoption entre, and many more cats, which were now more plentiful. In 2009, our first year of operating out of the new shelter, 998 animals found their new forever homes!
All animals are healthy, vaccinated and spayed or neutered if old enough, prior to adoption. Presently, there are many kittens looking for homes.
Burlington Humane has an active Pet Therapy program serving the community, as well as a Kids’ Club. We remain committed to creating a more humane place for animals in Burlington.
There are many volunteer opportunities available, such as working with the cats and dogs or assisting the staff with office duties. Volunteers are also needed for the various programs and fundraisers we run throughout the year.
