Theatre Burlington opens its 2024-25 season this month with the charming rom-com, The Invention of Romance.

Prior to the curtain going up (Friday, Sept. 13, 8 p.m.), there will be a short dedication ceremony for two long-serving members, Lawrie and Fay Bonanno, renaming the stage in their honour.

Lawrie and Fay were two of the earliest members of what was then known as Burlington Little Theatre (BLT). They didn’t seek the spotlight, never once appearing on stage, but preferred to work behind the scenes to make sure Burlington was home to a thriving community theatre.

In partnership with the City of Burlington, Lawrie was instrumental in building the Drama Centre. He also produced several award winning plays, designed and built sets and worked as a lighting/sound operator.

Prior to his death in 2019, Lawrie received numerous awards, including from the Burlington Performing Arts Centre and the Outstanding Achievement for Volunteerism from the Ontario Ministry of Culture.

Fay looked after the administrative side of things, from box office and publicity, to the membership newsletter and programs. In recent years, Fay took on the role of “un-official” historian and archivist for Theatre Burlington.

Following the performance, there will be a small reception to honour the Bonanno family.

For more than 70 years, Theatre Burlington has been producing award-winning theatre, including three main-stage shows, and an annual holiday show for children.

The Drama Centre is located on Teen Tour Way (behind the Central Park bandshell and beside Central Library).
