A suspected Norovirus outbreak at Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School has sent several students home.

An anonymous tip to BurlingtonToday said students started feeling stomach problems on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

“Halton Region Public Health has concluded that the stomach-related illnesses are likely due to Norovirus outbreak, which is spread from person to person,” Heather Francey, manager of communications and engagement for Halton District School Board said in an email.

“The safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority. Information from Public Health has been shared with all students, parents/guardians and staff including resources from Public Health on recommended measures to help stop the spread of the virus.”

As of Wednesday evening, 65 students were absent as a result of stomach-related issues. Hayden Secondary School has a population of around 1,325. The school remains open.

There are currently no other schools in the Halton District School Board reporting any increase in stomach-related illnesses in students or staff.
