Women’s Pickleball Club combines sport, friendship

New venture offers a chance to play and meet other people

Retired folks have been known to say they’re living the dream.

Pickleball enthusiast Rose Locco, 60, would be the first to agree.

When Locco moved from Vaughan to Burlington two years ago, she couldn’t believe how lucky she was: residents were friendly, outgoing and eager to meet new people. It was a far cry from what she’d become accustomed to.

And when she started playing pickleball just a few months ago, she was hooked.

Now, she’s started her own club – the Women’s Pickleball Club, intended for social interaction, skill development, fitness, building community and making friends. She decided to start the women's club on her own because she wasn't able to find any clubs that weren't co-ed.

“It’s about socializing and talking to other people,” she said. “It’s about being part of a team and getting outside the house. I don’t want people sitting at home alone. I really feel like I belong when I’m playing pickleball.

“It’s not as hard as tennis and it’s a sport everyone can play. It’s challenging, competitive and helps with balance, agility, hand-eye coordination, reflexes and fitness.”

Locco, who’s played volleyball, curling, bowling and badminton in the past, said it’s not surprising that pickleball is considered one of the fastest growing sports in North America. She said all ages are welcome, and everyone will have fun.

The club offers games three times a week: Haber Recreation Centre, 3040 Tim Dobbie Dr. on Sundays from 9-11 a.m. and Thursdays, 6 to 8 p.m., and at The Playground, 952 Century Dr. on Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon.

Generally, they play indoors, but – weather permitting – some days they could play outdoors.

The club is affiliated with both Pickleball Canada and Pickleball Ontario and many other businesses around the GTA.

The club offers both recreational and competitive pickleball play along with clinics and lessons.

“It’s a new club, so everyone is learning,” she said, adding it’s a great sport to get you in shape, without putting excessive strain on your body.

Along with regular court time, the Women’s Pickleball League offers tournaments, friendship and even 50/50 draws.

For details, email: [email protected] or visit the website, womenspickleballclub.com.

There’s also a co-ed club: for those interested in a mixed league; please visit the West GTA Pickleball Club website or email [email protected]

Membership is $361.60/year, which includes two or three plays per week year round (more days and times will be added once new members join) and a T-shirt. People can drop in for an hour, or stay for two, depending on individual schedules. Costs also cover facility rental, socials, insurance and the benefit of new friendships.

If anyone would like to try it out for a month, that’s an option too; $56.50 for two plays per week.
