February 18th, 1931 - August 26th, 2024

Gone to Heaven to be with her beloved husband, John. Loving mother to Judy Cutler (Rob) and Mike Birett (Kathy Farrell). Cherished Nana to Brad Cutler (Hilary) and Lauren McEachern (Gordie) and Great Grandma to Wyatt McEachern and Claire Cutler. Dear sister of Walter Hamsey (Gerri). Vera will be missed by many other family members including David Robinson (Kelly), Joseph Birett (Marguerite), Anna Sauga, Bert Lopinski, Lori McInerney (Bill), Russell Hamsey (Deb), Chris Hamsey and Laura Shushkewich (Russ).
Vera made friends wherever she went and treasured each and every one of them including the Smith Family, the Elsam Family, the “Little Girls’ Club”, Stas' Bednarowski, Henry Nguyen, John Pundyk and the staff past and present of Appleby Place.

Vera was born in Sudbury, Ontario and moved to Burlington at the age of 10. Her family worked hard as market garden farmers on Drury Lane. She met John, who was a local contractor, while working as a secretary at Nicholson’s Lumber. They enjoyed many years of camping and travel across North America, Europe and Hawaii. Vera lived her best life at Appleby Place where she loved the entertainment, bus outings and chocolate bar bingos, attended Hymn sings and Communion, helped organize the library, participated in Resident’s Council and helped with sales by talking with potential clients and showing her suite. She even surprised her family by starting exercise classes at age 80! In her down time, she watched CHCH TV, did word searches, the Dakim machine and phoned those she cared about. She will be missed.

Vera’s family thank the many people who provided her care or services. You all took a personal interest in her wellbeing which helped her to live a wonderful quality of life. Vera’s wish was for a private family service. To honour her memory please share some kindness with someone today or make a memorial donation to Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation, Burlington Humane Society or a charity of your choice. Condolences may be forwarded to the family through www.smithsfh.com
