Last year's event was well attended.

A free event by the Urban Indigenous Community celebrating Indigenous culture is being held at Spencer Smith Park today (June 21) at 5 p.m. for National Indigenous Peoples Day.

The celebration will include a prayer and Tobacco Ceremony from Indigenous Elder and Healer WhiteEagle, a performance by Burlington artist Amber Kakiishiway, a Powwow exhibition by Jamie Lindsey and music from Cliff Cardinal and Matt Bergman.

“It is on us to come together and celebrate diversity and inclusion,” WhiteEagle said in a press release. “As a Healer, I know that celebrating each other can be life transforming because it opens our heart center to new discoveries about ourselves. When we celebrate each other, we experience a new way of being and our world feels better. I am grateful that the City of Burlington supports its citizens and leaders, in showcasing their culture and history. Please come out and meet the Indigenous community.”

There will also be several cultural vendors at the celebration.

The City of Burlington supports the event and encourages residents to learn from and take part in Indigenous craft.

“This special event honors the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous communities,” Angela Papariza, manager of arts and culture at the City of Burlington, said. “It's a unique opportunity to engage with and learn from Indigenous leaders and artists, deepening our understanding and appreciation of their heritage. Come be part of this meaningful celebration, and let's grow together in respect and unity.”

The event starts at 5 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m.
